Lower Arroyo Bridges

The Lower Arroyo Bridges portfolio is an exploration of 2 bridges located in Pasadena, CA. These bridges are storied with history, and both are in use today. The Colorado Street Bridge, also Known as suicide bridge, was opened in 1913. It was an engineering marvel for it’s time, and was part of old historic Route 66. This bridge is still amazing today with it’s curves, and the way the sunlight plays through it at different times of the day. The Ventura Freeway Bridge is much newer, but is an amazing architectural lovers dream. It has arch after arch in its design and a beautiful layout that creates new twists and angles everywhere you walk.

The portfolio was completely captured using a Mamyia medium format black and white film camera. The prints are all silver gelatin wet chemical darkroom prints that were then selenium toned to increase their archival nature. By using this hands on process to create this portfolio iy has given me a deep connection to the work. As I processed the film and the prints I had many thoughts, how many people have seen these bridges, crossed these bridges, or have deep connections to these structures. Now I have a deep connection to these bridges.

I hope you enjoy the portfolio.

This gallery is all about the Lower Arroyo Bridges.
